Squash Ireland adheres to the Sport Ireland (SI) Anti-Doping policy, which aligns with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines. This compliance extends to the anti-doping regulations of the European and World Squash Federations. Doping refers to any violation of the World Anti-Doping Code, including the use or possession of substances or methods that enhance athletic performance, as well as the support or facilitation of such activities by coaches or support personnel.
Maintaining the integrity of sport is a collective responsibility.
Doping is fundamentally against the principles of fair play in squash and can have severe, even fatal, consequences. Athletes requiring medication for medical conditions can still compete, but some substances need prior approval to avoid testing positive for doping. This requires obtaining a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE).
Irish team and squad members aged U19 and above can be tested for drugs at any time, whether in competition or during training sessions. In European or World Squash events, players of any age may be subjected to testing.
Failure to comply with anti-doping guidelines can result in positive drug tests and severe sanctions from the sport’s governing body, ranging from warnings to bans. Players are ultimately responsible for any substances found in their anti-doping tests.
Players, coaches, and support personnel must familiarize themselves with anti-doping rules and regulations. For any uncertainties, contact the anti-doping officer of the relevant governing body, whether at the National, European, or World level. Dr. Michael Hanrahan is the anti-doping officer for Irish Squash and can be reached at [email protected].
