Derek Ryan went down in the first match after his exploits last night, 11-8, 11-4, 11-2 in 29 min. Just too much for the 42 yrs veteran.

Gaskin goes down in the 1st 3-11, Gaskin ties his match 1-1 (11-9), Richardson v Penders in the 3rd tie as Gaskin goes down in the 3rd set 3-11. Richardson takes the first 11-8 while Gaskin battles on at 3-4 in a very fast and physical game. Gaskin goes down in the 4th 6-11, Holland are now 2 matches up, Richardson drops 2nd 4-11… Ireland are under immense pressure!!

Richardson loses the 3rd and Ireland’s men are beaten by the Dutch as they can’t win on countback. They lads played well against a good team.

So it is Waleson Saturday afternoon for 11th place tomorrow.

WOMEN

Ireland’s women go into today’s semi final full of confidence after beating France yesterday who lost a close semi to England this morning 2-1.

2-1 in sets to Grinham. 4th set Perry down 1-2, 1-4 down, 1-6, looking bad for Madeline. Come on Madeline, dig in!! 3-7, 5-9, match ball to Grinham. Match to Grinham 11-5 in the 4th.

All down to Galway’s Laura Mylotte!!

Laura won the first 2 games 11-8 and 11-4 but lost the next two 6-11, 9-11. Cracker of a game from Laura winning 11-9 in the 5th so Ireland win 2-1 and are in the final vs England tomorrow afternoon.

The match lasted 49 minutes and was the first win for Laura in this championship and what a time to do it!!!

So for a second year in a row Ireland’s women’s team are in a European team Championship final vs as usual England. A tough prospect but one the team will look forward to and who knows?!!!

Good Luck! Aisling, Ciara, Laura and Madeline, their manager Anne Costello, and coachs Hadrian Stiff & Paul Bell.

Unchanged Top15 Ahead Of British Open

A quiet April on the WSA World Tour sees an unchanged Top15 ahead of the forthcoming World Series British Open event later this month.
Nicol David sits atop the women’s elite for the 80th consecutive month, leading Laura Massaro, Raneem El Weleily and Alison Waters to complete the Top4.
David is one of two Malaysian players to feature in the WSA Top20 along with Low Wee Wern who sits at No.7.  Massaro and Waters are also joined in the Top20 by former world No.2 compatriot Jenny Duncalf who is currently at No.8, and also Sarah-Jane Perry who rises two places to No.18 this month, the first sub-20 ranking of her career.
El Weleily remains the highest ranked Egyptian player, ahead of teenager Nour El Sherbini at No.5 and Omneya Abdel Kawy at No.14.  Just below Kawy, Australian pair Donna Urquhart and Rachael Grinham have switched places for the May rankings, with the former world No.1 and World Open champion Grinham slipping a place to No.17.
A disappointing quarter-final exit in the Irish Open for second seed Samantha Teran has seen the Mexican player slip to No.19, whilst Joey Chan of Hong Kong also slips a place to No.20.
Outside the Top20, Nicolette FernandesIrish Open final appearance has seen her rise three places to No.28 this month, just one place shy of her career best ranking.  Deon Saffrey’s Irish Open run also saw her leap three places as the Welsh qualifier reached the semi-finals of the event, beating third seed Aisling Blake in the opening round. Aisling has dropped 1 place to No. 24. The Welshwoman Saffrey now sits at No.48, her career best ranking.
The second WSA World Tour World Series event of the year, the Allam British Open, will take place in Hull, England from 19th May.

New PSA Rankings Show Increased Global Spread

1 May 2013

Whilst Egypt’s Ramy Ashour continues to lead the May Dunlop PSA Men’s World Squash Rankings by a considerable margin, it is the presence of 11 countries in the top 20 – representing four continents – which provides the most noteworthy aspect of the new list published today by the Professional Squash Association.

Swiss star Nicolas Mueller, his country’s highest-ranked player of all-time, moves up into the top 20 to add Switzerland to Egypt, England, France, Spain, Germany, Botswana, Australia, Netherlands, South Africa and India with players whose success on the PSA World Tour have earned them places in the elite top 20 group.

Further representation from Malaysia, Colombia, Finland, Hong Kong, Kuwait, New Zealand and Canada see players from 18 countries – and all five continents – in the top 40.

“To have a top twenty in any sport with this breadth of countries being represented is fantastic,” said PSA CEO Alex Gough.

“It shows another sign that squash is being played on a truly global front and we are very proud of this fact.  We will continue to keep growing the sport to all corners of the globe.”

Ashour, the reigning world champion from Cairo, holds his lead over England’s world number two Nick Matthew, while Frenchman Gregory Gaultier leapfrogs England’s James Willstrop to reclaim third place.

Mohamed El Shorbagy also rises above fellow Egyptian Karim Darwish to take over fifth place, while England’s Peter Barker does the same to Egyptian Amr Shabana to regain the No7 position.

Outside the top 20, several players mark career-high rankings – including France’s Gregoire Marche at 29 after his surprise quarter-final appearance in last month’s Grasshopper Cup in Switzerland; Kuwaiti Abdullah Al Muzayen at 33 following his 14th Tour title success at the Burgan Bank Challenger 10 on home soil; and New Zealand’s Campbell Grayson at 37 after winning the Houston Open in the USA.

WOMEN – Comprehensive victory over Wales 3-0 (9-1)

First up Madeline Perry had a quick victory over Wales’s Tesni Evans 3-0 in 19 minutes.  The game was fairly straightforward 11-7, 11-6 & 11-2. Laura Mylotte beat Hannah Davies 3-1, 11-7, 6-11, 11-6, 11-1 in 26 min to go two up. Again another convincing performance from Laura to secure the overall match vs Wales.

Just down to Aisling Blake to avenge her defeat by Deon Saffery, who beat her 3-0 in the 1st round of last week’s IRISH OPEN.

Latest – Aisling won 3-0 (11-4, 11-4, 11-7) in  35 min – Aisling was very motivated to win and gain her revenge which I suspect Deon expected.

So a clean sweep for Ireland’s women’s team from the first day – two 3-0’s vs Czech Republic & Wales.

Next up France tomorrow morning which will be an altogether more difficult challange but one that won’t deter them.

IRELAND V WALES HONOURS EVEN!

Brian Byrne vs David Haley – Brian has won the match beating David 11-8 in the fifth in 75 gruelling minutes to level the overall match 2 all. However Wales won in games overall 8-7.

A superb effort from Brian having been 2-1 down and only winning the 2nd 12-10. Brian lost the 1st, 6-11 but won the 2nd 12-10. lost the 3rd game which was very tight 9-11. He won a superb 4th 11-8, having raced into a 6-2 lead.

Well done Brian!

Derek Ryan has lost in 4 games to Scott Fitzgearld 4-11, 2-11, 11-3, 9-11. Derek brought the pace down in the 3rd game to win it but just ran out of luck in a tight last game coming back from 9-6 down to get to 10-9 but just lost out.

Steve Richardson made a great start, using all his experience in beating Joel Makin 3-0 in 51 mins. Unfortunatly Arthur Gaskin had a more difficult task and lost to world ranked 67 Peter Creed 3-0 in 44 min.

Now playing Ukraine late this afternoon.

GOOD LUCK TO OUR NATIONAL MENS & WOMENS TEAM. WE KNOW YOU WILL DO US PROUD!!

The winners and runner-ups are joined by the generous owner of sponsor Cannon Kirk Homes

World number 11 Madeline Perry played her best Squash of the week in the final of the Cannon Kirk Homes Irish Open 2013 to beat Guayana’s Nicolette Fernandes by three games to one. Nicolette was uncharacteristically slightly slow out of the blocks, but was on the verge of taking the second game when she squandered a 9:5 lead. She fought back in game three, recuperating from a 5:1 deficit, but was steamrolled 11:2 in game four. “I don’t think I did much wrong in game four”, said the world number 31, “but Madeline was flying in that game and was just too good.” Madeline was content with her performance, especially playing well in front of a home crowd. “This is not my home court, but this is as home as it gets to me, and winning in Ireland obviously means a lot to me.” The former world number three feels that this was good preparation for the European Team Championships happening next week: “there are some strong teams out there but if Aisling Blake and I are playing well, we are within a chance. Also, our number three player has gained some good experience and should make things hard for whoever she faces.

The two happy winners of the Irish Open 2013 - Madeline Perry and Mohamed Nafiizwan Adnan

Mohamed Nafiizwan Adnan was over the moon with his win in the men’s final over big Omar Abdel Meguid of Egypt. It was a fiercely contested match in the first two games, but Mohamed was just that much fresher in the last two games and ran out a 3:1 victory. Omar, who delighted the crowd with some incredible winner, but also frustrated them by not always clearing the ball perfectly, was gracious in defeat: “it’s been a long week for me and I think it could have gone to five if I had been a bit fresher. But Mohamed was the better player on the day and deservedly won.” For Mohamed victory here meant a lot, and he is eager to return next year. “I will relax now after a long week. Ireland has been good to me, it’s a great tournament for me, and lets hope that Cannon Kirk Homes, the sponsors, can support the event again next year.

In a first for the Cannon Kirk Homes Irish Open, the event was streamed live on the aertv.ie website, and commentary was provided by a number of players. For the finals Dan Zilic was joined by none other than Derek Ryan, who came fresh off court after beating top European junior David Ryan. Thousands of internet users followed the action online, and remarkably the viewership was truly international: “We saw a real spike in traffic from Mexico during Samantha Teran’s match”, said Mark Burke, senior producer at aertv.ie. And the players were impressed too: “I had some top ten players watch me yesterday, and they said I played well! This wouldn’t have been possible years ago”, the finalist Omar Abdel Meguid said, proving that also players benefit from the wider exposure. Finally, Alex Gough, CEO of the Professional Squash Association, also alluded how this type of coverage is a real boost for Squash’s bid for the inclusion in the 2020 Olympic Games. “We have always had the players, but we haven’t always had the exposure. We are getting this right this time, and coverage such as this is fantastic for the game”, the CEO said in an interview.

Which concludes this year’s Cannon Kirk Homes Irish Open 2013, an event that will be remembered for great Squash, spectacular online coverage, and a fifth title for home favourite Madeline Perry. Replays will be available online at aertv.ie during the course of next week. Dan Zilic

Nicolette Fernandes of Guyana - will she be smiling after tomorrow's final?

Madeline Perry made sure that Ireland is represented in tomorrow’s finals of the Cannon Kirk Homes Irish Open. The Irish top player made the final of the Irish Open for a record tenth time and will face Nicolette Fernandes, the Guyanese player who powered into the finals after an impressive win over Emily Whitlock. The final promises to be Madeline’s toughest test yet, but the world number eleven was tested by Deon Saffery in today’s semi-final. The Welsh number two took game two in a tie-break, which marked Madeline’s first dropped game of the tournament, but Perry recovered to take the next two games easily, and the match 3:1.

Following the women’s final will be a clash between Egyptian Omar Abdel Meguid and Malaysia’s Mohamed Nafiizwan Adnan. Both top 50 players were tested in the semis by their opposition: Meguid took out the top seed Chris Simpson in four hotly contested games, while Adnan beat the US number one Christopher Gordon by the same scoreline.

Tomorrow's finalist Adnan of Malaysia - celebrated his twenty-seventh birthday here in Dublin three days ago

Tomorrow’s matches again will be live-streamed by aertv.ie – coverage beginning at 3pm. However, aertv.ie will also be streaming tomorrow’s the Premier League Cup final between Sutton and Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club from 10:30am onwards. Also here there’ll be some fantastic matches on who between the likes of Irish Squash legend Derek Ryan and Ireland’s top junior player David Ryan, as well as Nigel Peyton and Eoin Ryan.

Madeline Perry - through to another final

Entry to Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club is completely free, just like aertv.ie’s excellent live streaming! Dan Zilic

Gaskin, on the right, suffered a narrow yet highly entertaining defeat against Chris Gordon

Watchers throughout the world were treated to some high-energy Squash live on aertv.ie – with Chris Collins, Damian O’Reilly and Dan Zilic reporting live on the action.

The day kicked off with Emily Whitlock beating Emma Beddoes in a tough four game encounter, and Chris Simpson fulfilled his number one seeding when overcoming qualifier Jens Schoor in four. Nicolette Fernandes caused the first significant upset beating Samantha Teran of Mexico in straight games, but Omar Abdel Meguid got himself out of trouble in the second against Lucas Serme to win in four.
The the Irish heroes took to the court – and Madeline Perry justified her number one ranking with a comprehensive victory over Misaki Kobayashi of Japan. The crowd were therewith perfectly warmed up for the next Irish encounter, featuring yesterday’s hero Arthur Gaskin. Gaskin showed terrific spirit in his match against Chris Gordon, and remarkably scored ten points in a row when he came back form 1:4 down in the second to take it 11:4. But the efforts took their toll, and despite having Irish Squash coaches Derek and Eoin Ryan in his corner, Arthur lost in four tough games.

Madeline Perry - never in danger of losing today

The night ended with Deon Saffery continuing her run beating Colin Aumard in three impressive games, and Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan, whose birthday it was yesterday, came back from 5:10 down in the first game against Shaun Le Roux, took the game 12:10 and the subsequent games too to win 3:0 – treating the crowd to some rarely seen pick-ups and shots.

Hopes remain on Madeline then, but the crowd can rely on some more terrific action in tomorrow’s men’s semis! Live streaming continues on aertv.ie!
