Ciara Moloney and Brian Byrne boyth won superb finals in the Leinster Senior Open played at Fitzwilliam LTC over the weekend of 14th – 16th November. Ciara played Sachika Balvani, a player who is on a squash scholarship in the USA and is studying at UCD for 6 months. it was a great match and a super  challenge for Ciara which she met head on. In the 5th game she had a couple of match balls which Sachika save but Ciara won through on her next match ball to win 11-9, 9-11, 11-5, 10-12, 12-10.

Brian Byrne met the 18 year old Michael Craig in the mens final which promised to be a titanic struggle with the super retrieving of Brian and youthful exuberance of Michael. Brian is working very hard at his game with national coach Hadrian Stiff and you can see the results. Even though it ended in a 3-0 victory for Brian it was very close with some super rallies many over 50 strokes in length. This match will be good for Michael in his transition into Senior squash. The match score was 11-9, 11-6, 12-10.

Highlights from the Delaware Investments US Open Final 2014

Carlow Junior Squash turned in a terrific performance this weekend at the Victoria Squash Centre, Rotterdam this weekend where they were overall winners of the 21st Friendship Cup.

This is an invitational interclub event held annually between Carlow, Liverpool, London and Rotterdam clubs. Now in it’s 21st year, it was victory to the Carlow team of Matthew Downey, Jake Somers, Jamie Stafford and David Kavanagh. David Kavanagh reached the final of his section and finished runner-up and Jake Somers finished 3rd in his. The event is scored on an overall basis where every score/match counts and remarkably the 4 man team beat the 20 strong Liverpool contingent by just .1 of a point.
