Three-time World Champion Nick Matthew Spearheads 2016 World Squash Day
Three-time PSA Men’s World Champion Nick Matthew is encouraging every squash club on the planet to open their doors in support of World Squash Day 2016 – which takes place on Saturday October 22nd – and help raise funds for Unicef.
The theme for World Squash Day 2016 is to promote the social side of the sport whilst raising vital funds for Unicef. So we are encouraging all clubs in Ireland to organise an event for the day. There are prizes on offer for the best club activity, in the views of the judges. Send in pictures & a brief report of the day to [email protected]
“The wonderful thing about squash is that it creates lifelong friendships. Two players can be hugely competitive on court during their match and then go for a drink together afterwards. World Squash Day gives us the opportunity to showcase the sport and show the rest of the world what they are missing” says Matthew
Squash is rated one of the healthiest sports in the world. It is also a sport for life, with competitions starting at under-11 level and continuing through all the age groups to Masters events for players aged 80 and above.
“The energy and competitive level is exactly the same at international level as it is at your local squash club,” added Matthew. “Players fight for every point and then go and socialise”
“We need to be good neighbours and invite athletes from other sports to try their hand at squash. I often train with a number of athletes from different sports and they all respect the skills and the fitness, dedication and discipline required to succeed”
“Whatever sports other people may play, you know that squash will give their fitness a boost. Even a tennis legend like Roger Federer credits much of his amazing movement and shot selection to playing squash as a youngster.”
Professional Squash Association (PSA) Chief Executive Alex Gough said: “As Nick says, every professional player first got on court, usually with their parents, at their local squash club. So all the professionals understand what we are trying to achieve in helping clubs to promote the sport. The PSA is committed to growing squash at every level and World Squash Day is the ideal vehicle to enable clubs to open their doors, invite people in and increase participation all over the planet.”
HOW TO GET INVOLVED:
Clubs can arrange an Open Day with lots of fun activities for members and guests all day long. Start off with free introductory coaching sessions for players of all ages and standards.
HOW TO BE A GOOD NEIGHBOUR: WHO TO INVITE
– Players from other sports clubs
– School groups (try to get the teachers involved and show them how beneficial squash can be to add to the curriculum activities)
– Invite business groups and explain how a happy and healthy work force is more creative and productive
MONSTER FRIENDLY MATCHES:
Who can organise the biggest social match on World Squash Day?
Challenge a local club to a friendly match and, whether it’s five-a-side or fifty a side, make sure you register the event on our World Squash Day 2016 Facebook page and the share the news on Twitter.
After the event, make sure you send your pictures & brief story of the day to [email protected]
SUPPORTING UNICEF:
This is our second year of World Squash Day supporting the work of Unicef. With conflict in many parts of the world leading to mass migration, and natural disasters such as the recent earthquakes in Italy, their work supporting the children caught up in these situations is more important than ever.
WORLD SQUASH DAY T-SHIRTS:
Official World Squash Day T-shirts can be ordered from iProSports. All of the profits will be donated to Unicef. Simply click on this link:http://www.iprosports.co.uk/…/world-squash-day-2016-charit…/
INVOLVE YOUR JUNIORS:
Please involve your junior players in creating and planning events to raise money for Unicef.
Encourage the juniors to be involved in helping other young people who are not as fortunate as themselves.

Match Report Day 3
The first match of the day also brought the first upset in the seeding as Laura Pomportes of France beat Alison Thomson of England. Laura was sharp and attacking from the very first point of the match. Despite Alison’s efforts to work her way back into the game, Laura never let her control slip taking it 3-0.
Ineta Mackevica of Latvia faced local Irish player Hannah Craig in what turned out to be a closely fought contest. Ineta’s early lead in the first disappeared as Hannah began to test her opponent. Ineta however held on with some decisive final shots to take the first 12/10. Hannah bounced back quickly in the second to level the match. The next two games were again highly contested but Ineta kept in front to secure a 3-1 win. Elin Harlow similarly held out against fellow Welsh player Nia Davis to win a tight 3-1 match. Hana Moataz of Egypt completed the bottom half of the quarter-final draw with a 3-0 win over Jenny Haley of Wales.
The top half of the Women’s draw went very much accord ing to seeding with Tinne Gilis , Rachael Chadwick, Tessa Ter Sluis and Anna Klimundova all securing 3-0 wins over their respective opponents.
In the Men’s event, Tristan Eysele of South Africa faced a strong challenge from Dutch player Marc ter Sluis. In a physically demanding match, with hard hitting and long rallies, Tristan recovered from losing the first game to just cross the line 12/10 in the fourth to win 3-1. Irish players Sean Conroy and Michael Craig faced each other in a “local derby” for a quarter-final spot. In front of a large crowd of local supporters for both players, Michael settled into his rhythm quickly, benefiting from some loose errors from Sean to build an early lead. Sean then worked Michael very hard to level at 7-7 before Michael again capitalised on a couple of opportunities to close out the first set. The second set proved stop start with Sean unable to get a rhythm and Michael picking off points. In the third set with Michael tiring, Sean was finally able to find the game and pace that suited him better – edging the third and continuing right through for a well-earned 3-2 win.
There was also great local interest in Ireland’s Brian Byrne who faced Bradley Masters from England in the evening session. After two games of fast paced squash the players were level 1-1. The third proved decisive as Brian worked his opponent very hard to build a 2-1 win. Though Bradley fought hard and kept it tight with Brian in the first half of the fourth set, a quick run of points towards the end brought a 3-1 win.
The top seed Richie Fallows, Yuri Farneti, Douglas Kempsell, Lyell Fuller and Chris Fuller completed 3-0 wins to leave all top 8 seeds through to the quarter-finals.

Match Report Day 1
The Legacy Wealth Belfast Open got off to a great start today with the Lord Mayor of Belfast attending the opening match (see Twitter @BrianKingston). Squash professionals from both the Men’s and Women’s PSA World Tour are competing for a total $10k prize money at the Belfast Boat Club over the next six days.
Local player Michael Craig produced an excellent result winning 3-1 in the opening round of the Mens Qualifying to the delight of a large crowd of supporters. Michael, home from college in the US, took the first game of his match against Oliviero Ventrice of Italy. The second proved to be a real struggle between the two players, with tough rallies and nothing between them – Michael just edging the game 16/14. Oliviero recovered faster from this effort, opening up a lead and taking the third comfortably 11/5. However, by the fourth Michael once again got in front and succeeded in closing out the match.
In earlier matches Miles Jenkins from England proved too strong for local David Ayerst, winning the first two games comfortably and making David work very hard. David had a better start in the third game, taking an early lead and holding this to reach a game point. However he was unable to take this opportunity and Miles finished the match 11/3. 11/5, 12/10.
The next match between Owain Taylor of Wales and local player Darren Waring followed a similar pattern. Owain took a 2-0 lead before being pushed hard in the third set. Final score 11/5, 11/4, 11/8. Sam Ellis of England completed a 3/0 win over Irish player David Noone as did Dutch player Marc ter Sluis with a 3/0 over local player Peter McNeice.
In the remaining matches, Matthew Broadberry and Chris Leiper fought a close first 3 sets before Chris closed out the match 3/1. Dan Bergin from Wales secured a similar 3-1 win over England’s Mike Lowrey. In the final match of the evening, Phil Nightingale completed a 3-1 win over fellow English player Matthew Sidaway.
Qualifying starts today in the LEGACY WEALTH BELFAST OPEN @ Belfast Boat Club. There are 8 irish players competing today. First up is David Ayerst, then Darren Waring, David Noone, Michael Craig and Peter McNeice. In the women’s event there are 3 Irish players – Belfast’s Ellie McVeigh & Hannah Craig and Sophie O’Rourke from Cork. Good Luck to all the Irish players.
