An appreciation of Mossie by Ann Sheppard

“The number of hours, days, months and even years that Mossie has unselfishly given to coaching juniors can only be regarded as an historical contribution to the game and to Old Belvedere” (Harry Walsh 1987 – the Commemorative Booklet 1962-1987 for Old Belvedere Squash Rackets Club.) and so it continued for many decades – that is Mossie’s contribution to Irish squash and squash players in general, continued as player, coach, advisor and mentor.

Mossie returned from England in December 1971, joined Old Belvedere and immediately began to take up squash seriously and it was from that time on that the club became a serious competitor in the leagues. How many players who have watched or played against Mossie were not awe struck by his amazing precision – that lob serve that died in the far corner, that drop shot that always got the nick. This precision enabled him to continue his flourishing squash career to well in his 70s and to have held the record of the most capped Irish Veteran International player.

By 1987 Old Belvedere had produced 22 Junior Interprovincial players and 6 junior internationals, these included his four children – Rosie, Elaine, Maurice and Chris The men’s and women’s teams under his watchful eye and guidance won the Leinster league many times and all Ireland championships on several occasions. But it was not only the members and teams in Old Belvedere that benefitted from Mossie’s tutelage he coached and mentored so many Leinster juniors and future senior internationals. He was a regular presence at interprovincial tournaments and competitions, sometimes in an official capacity more often just out of interest in the game and the players.

Mossie could talk for hours on every aspect of squash and every aspect of each individual’s technique and style of play. This attention to detail and personal touch was part and parcel of his daily professional life as a medical doctor to which he added his pioneering research.

Mossie could also talk for hours on many other subjects too, he loved all sport, he was a scientist, a researcher, a lover of music, convivial company and a gentleman. Behind all of this was his raison d’etre, his backbone – his family.

Our sympathies go to them – Kate, Rosie, Maurice and Chris and to his grand children.

Ar dheis de go raibh a anam.

Ann Sheppard

The death has occurred of Dorothy Boyd aged 90 a former Irish international player and a founding member of the Ulster Women’s Squash Racquets Association. The board of Irish Squash would like to extend sympathy to Susan, William & Andrew and their families on their loss. Dorothy was a huge contributor to squash in Ireland and one of it’s pioneers.

She was involved in many aspects of squash throughout Ireland from the 1960s through to the mid 1990s.

Dorothy was involved along side her representation of Ireland and Ulster in organising tournaments, establishing coaching and refereeing programmes, organising the Uwsra weekly leagues and managing teams at both senior and junior levels.

An appreciation of Dorothy Boyd by Dorothy Armstrong

Dorothy Boyd was the mainstay of the Ulster Women’s Squash Rackets Association from the 1960’s , through the 70’s and in to the 80’s.

She was a talented rackets player who played tennis for Ulster . She then played the relatively new sport of squash winning the Irish Open championships in 1964 and 1968 and playing for Ireland 26 times.

She went on to dedicate an immense amount of time to the administration of squash, running the Leagues and producing the calender of events for the season. At the height of women’s squash in Ulster there were about 50 teams and 8 leagues. She was a selector and also was involved with administration of Irish Squash. Dorothy presented the trophy for the Irish Open women’s title in the mid 1960’s. It  is still being used today, and some of the best women’s squash players in the world have their name on it.

Gold for Deirdre Faul – Her 7th!! Plus 4 medals in Swimming!!

Liver transplant woman squashes competition at World Transplant Games winning her seventh in a row World Champion title

Liver transplant recipient Deirdre Faul from Dalkey Dublin squashed competition at the World Transplant Games. She has achieved an amazing ‘Seven in a Row’ World Transplant Squash Champion title and a Gold medal for winning her squash event the World Transplant Games in Newcastle today.

The mother of two sons has reigned supreme at the biennial games since first winning Gold for Squash at the World Transplant Games in 2007. Today saw her sail through qualifiers to reach the final against a French competitor with a final score of 3 games to nil in a best of five competition. A competitor representing Great Britain/Northern Ireland shared third place with an Argentinian lady. Deirdre said, “I’m delighted. The French competitor was coming back in the third match so I had to stay relaxed and focused. It is amazing to get seven in a row. A big thanks to my coach Frank Donnelly for all his help and to Irish Squash for their support coming up to the Games and of course a very special thanks to my donor and donor family”.

Deirdre (51), a liver transplant recipient, also won another four medals at the Games. She broke two World Transplant time records in Swimming at the 100m Breaststroke and the 400m freestyle events and she also was awarded with a Silver in the 50m Breastroke and 200m Freestyle, an extraordinary accomplishment as just days previously the 51 year old defended and won her World Transplant title in Squash, her seventh in a Row since her first win at the 2007 games.

Deirdre is among 38 members of Transplant Team Ireland who are participating at the World Transplant Games in Newcastle Gateshead this week. Athletes are competing in their respective age categories in the following events: badminton, cycling, darts, golf, petanque, squash, swimming, table tennis, ten pin bowling, tennis, mini-marathon, and track and field.

The team’s final medals tally was 17 Gold, 18 Silver and 15 Bronze which earned them a very respectable 11th place position on the leader board amongst 56 countries some with larger teams. A really magnificent performance!

This year the team has gratefully received support from Swim Ireland, Athletics Ireland and Irish Squash. The on-going coaching support from Swim Ireland has been particularly welcomed. Astellas Pharma Ltd. has again provided some sponsorship towards the costs of running the team.
