Finals

So we get to the end of a fabulous week of top quality squash with 2 finals which promise to be as exciting as we hope. The womens final was first up, with Emily Whitlock v Tinne Gilis. Tinne’s sister Nele is the current reigning champion of the Irish Open….from 2019!!

The first game was nip and tuck with great variation by both players and movement around the court. Gilis was particularly effective with her overhead backhand vollies into the nick. Tinne won the 1st game 12-10. Emily was always going to come back and she did and ground out a 11-9 win in the 2nd game. She had to work hard for it. However Gilis was not going away and she played like she did in the first game, in the 3rd & 4th. She won the 3rd easily enough 11-6 and was looking good. In the 4th game she got herself 4 match balls, Whitlock saved all 4. At 10 all Gilis dug in again and didn’t let losing those 4 points unnerve her and she took the next 2 points to become the 2022 Cannon Kirk Irish Open Champion.

Next up was the Scottish Final with Greg Lobban and Alan Clyne. Lobban was slight favourite and with the way he played in the semi final  last night, if he could reproduce that control and movement, he would be hard to beat. In the early stages, there were rallies of 50/60 shots and the crowd were glued to the game. Greg was always in control in reality, even though Alan gave it everything and went toe to toe. Lobban won the 1st 11-2, having ground Clyne down. The pattern continued for the next 2 games which Lobban won to 5 & 7.  The match even though it was 3-0, took 52 minutes, reflecting the very long rallies and endurance of both players.

Congratulations to Greg Lobban, Cannon Kirk irish Open Champion for 2022

Men

[7] Alan Clyne (SCO) v [4] Greg Lobban (SCO) 2-11, 5-11, 7-11 – 0-3

Women

[1] Emily Whitlock (WAL) v [2] Tinne Gilis (BEL) 10-12, 11-9, 6-11, 10-12 – 1-3

Friday April 22nd

Semi finals day here at the Cannon Kirk Irish Open. Four nations represented in the Women’s Semi’s – Belgium, England, South Africa & Wales. The No.1 seed Emily Whitlock was playing the unseeded Grace Gear, who has had a super week, causing a couple of upsets, but on this occasion Whitlock was too good for her, winning in three.

The 2nd Semi saw the local favourite Alex Fuller who now plays out of Fitzwilliam, playing the No.2 seed Tinne Gilis of Belgium. It was a super match which was very close except for the 2nd game. The other 3 games all went over 10 all. However despite playing really well, Fuller lost 3-1.

In the Men’s semi’s there were 2 Scots, an Englishman and Frenchman. Alan Clyne of Scotland, the No. 7 seed belied his seeding to reach the semi’s and went one further by winning his match vs Auguste Dussourd 3-o to reach the final. The last match of the day had Greg Lobban of Scotland play George Parker of England. Lobban played with full control and moved around the court with ease.  He never looked in any real pressure and won it easily 3-0.

So we have 2 great finals to look forward to tomorrow, with the No.1 and 2 seeds in the women’s final; Emily Whitlock  & Tinne Gilis. In the Men’s, Scottish teammates, Greg Lobban plays Alan Clyne. Great preparation for Scotland’s effort to win the European Championships in Eindhoven next week.

Semi Finals

Thursday April 21st

Day 3 of the Cannon Kirk Irish Open from Fitzwilliam LTC., we had the quarter finals in both the Women’s & Men’s competitions today.
There were some upsets with higher seeds losing to a lower ranked player. In the women’s  draw, unseeded Grace Gear beat the No.4 seed Rachel Arnold 3-1. Grace is playing so well this week. Next upset was Alex Fuller beating the No.3 seed Lucy Turmel, comprehensively 3-0. the 2nd game went to 18-16 but  Alex played in a determined way to get the 3-0 win. Watch her tomorrow! The No.1 & 2 seeds, Emily Whitlock and Tinne Gilis both won as expected.

In the men’s event the first upset was the No. 1 seed Patrick Rooney losing his match 2-3 to the gritty and hard working Alan Clyne of Scotland; a super win for Alan. The battle of the 2 Frenchmen was won by Ausguste Dussourd over Lucas Serme, 3-0 in comprehensive fashion. Greg Lobban and George Parker won as expected but Parker was pushed all the way by Rory Stewart of Scotland.

So the semi’s tomorrow starting at 5pm with some great matches and continuing to 9pm. Make sure you watch it all on PSA Live.

Tuesday April 19th

First day of the Cannon Kirk Open and we had some super squash. Our 4 Irish players all played today with first up Hannah McGugan vs Kaitlyn Watts of New Zealand. The first PSA event for Hannah, so a big ask. She gave it her all but lost to a much more experienced player, 3-0.

Breanne Flynn was playing Chan Yiwen WR 72. Breanne played really well winning the 1st game 11-9. The higher ranked Malaysian came into the match much more and won the next 3 games. Breanne never gave up and pushed the last game to 10-12.

The two Irish men also played 2 higher ranked players. Sam Buckley in his 1st year on the PSA tour played WR 57 Henry Leung from Hong Kong China. Sam won the 1st game, 11-9 and had game points in the 2nd, which went to 16-14 to Leung. Sam won the 3rd 11-9, playing some super squash, belying his youth and novice status on the tour. Leung came back in the 4th to take it 11-8. So a deciding game, which was nerve racking for the home crowd.  The 2 players went toe to toe but unfortunatly Sam made 3 errors mid game to give Leung the initiative, which he didn’t let go and he won the gane 11-7. So, so close for Sam to beat a top 60 player. He said he just got tired in that last game. He showed all the promise and potential he has though.

Sean Conroy was last of the home players to play. Sean was playing Mo Syafiq Kamal from Malasyia WR 74. Kamal took the 1st but Sean fough back and levelled the match winning the 2nd 11-9 in a very tight match. With the higher ranked players, the longer the match goes on, the better they go, able to last and dig in. Kamal took the 3rd and 4th to win 3-1.

The top 8 seeds in both events play their first matches tomorrow, so we can expect even more quality squash on day 2.

Day 4 & Finals Day

Finals day. Including the individual event, we have been in Eindhoven 10 days now – going from the hotel to the club and back twice per day. Captain Dylan is very excited to get home and we all know it, reminders of how much he missed his double bed were hourly.
Our last match was for 5th place and we had a decent Welsh team to contend with.
Sean Murphy was first up against 14 year old, Archie Turnbull. Archie is an impressive athlete, the current British U15 champion, word is he can complete 41 pull-ups and it doesn’t come as a surprise when you see his build.
Sean was tested in the first but took control in the last two games and ran out a comfortable winner, but this welsh kid is one to watch.
Dylan Moran faced Rhys Evans, Rhys had a great tournament so far and was on a confidence high. Dylan was carrying a niggle that got progressively worse and he unfortunately had to stop mid match. Rhys was looking good, it’s a shame Dylan didn’t get to test himself a little more as it would have been a tight battle.
In the decider, Hannah played an athletic Ellie Breach. Both players matched each other squash wise but the Welsh player had a little more in the tank – Hannah fell just short in a few tough rallies. Ellie took out the tie in 3 and with that claimed 5th spot for the Welsh.
A disappointing end for us but we are a young team and will hopefully be back next year to put in a strong challenge for the title.
In the final, England managed a 2-1 win over a passionate French team, in the history of this event the English have only lost 3 times. Hopefully next year we can be the fourth to deny them.
Players party was held at the squash club to wrap things up. The organisers had a food truck with burgers and kebabs and a disco in the lounge. A nice way to finish a very well run event.

Day 3

1/4 finals day today. After losing to Spain, we saw this as a chance to prove ourselves, knowing it was going to be tough against the home team.
No.1 string match was first up, Dylan Moran taking on the runner up from the individual event, Rowan Damming. It was a well fought match, tight all the way to the business end but the Dutch player showed his class and resilience, taking all three games.
Jack O’Flynn came up against Knut, a player who seems about 7ft tall with size 15 shoes. In the height is the tension and emotion, Knut looked as if he was hardly breathing and in a world of his, his calmness was impressive. Both players fought very fairly, Jack did everything that was asked of him and put in a performance to be proud of. He unfortunately was just a few points shy of victory and with that we lost the tie.
Hannah played out the dead rubber and was very impressive, winning 2-0 in a best of 3.

In the evening match, to put us in for the 5/6 playoffs, we beat Belgium.
It’s so easy to presume we can show up and beat these teams who are ranked beneath us. In reality, Dylan had to play a really high level of squash and dig really deep to take out a quality opponent in 4 tough games. The Belgian kid had been watching way too much ‘Asal’ squash and was difficult to find a way through. Couple that with fatigue and cramp, Dylan was a trooper and put us one up very impressively.
Sean Murphy played no.2 and had a similar battle without the cramp issue. A tough four game battle with a great mover, he fended off all the attacks and put together a very polished performance. Delighted to take the tie 2-0.
Hannah played another dead rubber, this time falling short of the mark. Possibly a match too far on the emotional day. But nonetheless we are through and she will be required to be in top form for battle against the Welsh tomorrow.
We’ve made friends with the Welsh over the years. A similar squash nation to ourselves and it will be a fun and intriguing match tomorrow. Our final match.
The guys have been exceptional in all areas this event, I hope they find the energy to do themselves justice tomorrow.
A young team with another year ahead of them next year, hopefully with Denis intact, I think this event could be ours for the taking..
For now, we will rest up and do our best in the morning. A match that promises good entertainment!
Wish us luck.

Day 2

Our one and only match today was at 5pm, giving the team an unusual bit of free time in the morning to relax and prepare. Our hotel made a deal with the local David Llyod centre to access the facility for a minimal price, so we chose to practice at the courts there and have a wind down. Followed by an easy stroll around the city and some quality brunch.
Eindhoven transport is thankfully super easy, not super cheap but it’s good to have certainly and very regular buses..
We arrived at the club in good time and had our focus on beating Spain, the winners to top the group and play Switzerland in the 1/4’s. 2nd place would mean a tougher opponent in the Dutch.
Dylan was first on and was relishing the chance to take revenge on the Spaniard, who he had a shock loss to in the 1st round of the individuals. The Spanish play with a lot of passion and that can make up for the deficit in ability. But after trading the first two games, Captain Moran stepped up the pace and shut down his extremely boisterous opponent finishing him off 3-1.
Sophie played at G1 today. Her opponent is on an Easter break from an American college where she is on a squash scholarship, a formidable opponent. Sophie played well in the first and showed how she can trade blows with the heavy hitters but it was difficult to sustain the quality and bit by bit she lost control of the rallies and then the match, a valiant effort but a 3-0 loss.
The decider, Sean Murphy taking on Adrian Gracia, two skilful players both carrying a lot of weight and expectation on their shoulders..
The Spaniard started more positivity, not showing too many nerves and picking off Sean’s cross courts. He was quickly into a 1-0 lead and 8-2 up in the 2nd. Sean found his length, his rhythm, his belief and clawed back to 10-10 only to lose out on a dodgy call – but was certainly in the match. He raced to an 11-4 score line in the 3rd, looking strong.
But, somehow, the Spanish player came out firing and dominated the 4th. Some extremely high pitched roaring from his team mates summoned some energy for him..
A devastating loss for us, one we thought we could have won. But into the 1/4’s we march with lots to play for against the home team, the Netherlands.
We’re on at 12pm tomorrow but for now we will get some good food into us and rest up for another battle ahead.

IRISH SQUASH LAUNCHES DIGITAL VERSION OF STRATEGIC PLAN – REACHING ALL OUR MEMBERS

The print version of the Irish Squash Strategic Plan for 2022 – 2027 was launched in February at the National Senior Championships with newly elected CEO of Sport Ireland, Una May in attendance as well as Shane Califf, NGB Director of Sport Ireland. We are delighted to now launch our plan online so it is available to all involved in the game. (Link Here)

The plan is centred on the squash club rather than on the individual player or provincial association. We hope after a very difficult 2 years that squash players at all levels are back on court in their clubs.

You will see that we have an ambitious plan to develop our game over the next 5 years. This requires us to continue to evolve as a strong governing body that is professional and fit for purpose. As a volunteer organisation with a professional outlook, we will ask for the support of players and clubs all across the country to help us deliver our goals.

With this in mind, the board of Irish Squash has appointed a 3-person team who will oversee implementation of the plan:

STRATEGIC DELIVERY GROUP (SDG)

The team comprises John Dineen who will lead the group, alongside Derek McGrath of Sport2Sport who was responsible for developing our plan and Christine Mooney, Honorary Treasurer in Irish Squash. John can be contacted at [email protected]

The plan will be reviewed regularly by the Board of Irish Squash to assess progress: goals will be measured and reset annually as necessary. We invite you to engage with the plan and we welcome all feedback. As we progress with the implementation process, we intend to expand the number of members directly involved in various sub-groups aligned with the Strategic Plan pillars.

An immediate opportunity to liaise with the SDG will be next Thursday 21st April at the PSA Irish Open in Fitzwilliam 2.30pm to 6.30pm. We look forward to engaging with as many members as possible.

Please consider getting involved, if you would like to contribute.
