Sport NI has launched its quest to celebrate the unsung heroes of sport through the annual SportMaker awards. These awards awards celebrate the unsung heroes of sport in Northern Ireland- the coaches, volunteers and officials who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make sport happen.
Nominations for the SportMaker awards are now open. The awards give the sporting community the opportunity to showcase their achievements and give special thanks to coaches, officials and volunteers.
Sport NI Chair George Lucas said: “Our SportMaker Awards acknowledge the incredible work of our sporting community and highlight the outstanding people and projects that have made an impact over the last year. We know there are many unsung sporting heroes out there who work tirelessly behind the scenes to help enrich people’s lives through the power of sport. If you know a SportMaker, please nominate them today!”
Nominations are open now until 9 October, 2023, with 11 award categories recognising achievement at all levels of sports participation, from grassroots through to high performance.

Irish Squash would like to invite all members members to an organisational review workshop, taking place on Saturday 16th September from 10am to 3pm in Fitzwilliam LTC. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the proposed new constitution with our members. We would like as many people as possible to attend so that we can hear their views in advance of an EGM, which takes place on the 25th of September.
Irish Squash continues to introduce changes in our organisation that are consistent with the aims of our Strategic Plan 2022-2027 “Connecting the Dots”. In particular, we are focusing on becoming more professional in how we deliver support to the squash community. The recent appointment of Scott Graham in the new position of CEO is a significant advance and he brings a wealth of experience from his previous role as Operations Manager in Cycling Ireland. Tiernan Harris is our new full-time Office Administrator covering a range of duties, in particular SportyHQ and membership management. Paul Nugent remains in his COO role and his experience of working in the squash sector is invaluable to our expanded team.
Having began professionalising the organisation, our focus now turns to how the Irish Squash is structured from a governance perspective. Following a series of review meetings and legal input, the board recognises that the board itself needs to be restructured: reducing the number of directors, with representation being skills-based rather than geographic. Our constitution also needs to reflect the new executive process required following appointment of our CEO.

Leinster Squash will be starting the Leinster League again at the end of September. Entry for Teams are required to be submitted by the 17th of September. If your club is interested, please complete the following Leinster League Entry Form.
This is one of a series of events that Leinster Squash intend to operate this year to encourage all Irish Squash affiliated clubs and players to get involved and enjoy the game within and beyond your club from novice to elite player.
We plan to develop a simple one-page brochure to help clubs and players understand what is on offer over the season. Please see a draft of the brochure which we plan to launch later this year to give you a flavour of what we are thinking
Leinster Squash has been hard at work in the off season working on a comprehensive development plan for the coming season which we shall launch later in September. It will be aligned to the Irish Squash Strategy and operate against the following streams;
1. Participation and Awareness
2. Club Development
3. Coaching & Player Development
4. Infrastructure and Facilities
5. Event Organisation & Competitions
6. Team Leinster (Elite Players)
7. Collaboration & Partnerships
8. Org Development and Operations

It is a “part time” role called the “Games Promotion Officer” and will be responsible for the promotion of the game (across Social Media) and administration of the League on the Single Platform. Interviews are underway at the moment so please expect an announcement in the near future.

As reported in the Westmeath Independent, Athlone Squash Club have been given the go ahead to their ambitious plans for a new state-of-the-art squash centre. The new centre will be based close to Athlone Regional Sports Centre (ARSC) and will consist of three indoor squash courts, changing facilities, storage, toilets and an outdoor padel court.
In migrating to this new hub from the currently used Clara Sports and Leisure centre, Athlone SC hopes that the squash clubhouse could be a turning point and a magnet for the Midlands region in terms of the revival of the game. It is hoped that this new facility will attract many young people in the wider area by increasing its visibility to the public on such a prominent and well used site.
The exciting new facility can house hundreds of players with an option to expand if demand requires.
The project has been part funded to date by the Rural Development Programme, 2014 to 2020, and the club is also extremely thankful to Westmeath County Council and Westmeath Community Development for getting the project to this stage.
