Unchanged Top15 Ahead Of British Open

A quiet April on the WSA World Tour sees an unchanged Top15 ahead of the forthcoming World Series British Open event later this month.
Nicol David sits atop the women’s elite for the 80th consecutive month, leading Laura Massaro, Raneem El Weleily and Alison Waters to complete the Top4.
David is one of two Malaysian players to feature in the WSA Top20 along with Low Wee Wern who sits at No.7.  Massaro and Waters are also joined in the Top20 by former world No.2 compatriot Jenny Duncalf who is currently at No.8, and also Sarah-Jane Perry who rises two places to No.18 this month, the first sub-20 ranking of her career.
El Weleily remains the highest ranked Egyptian player, ahead of teenager Nour El Sherbini at No.5 and Omneya Abdel Kawy at No.14.  Just below Kawy, Australian pair Donna Urquhart and Rachael Grinham have switched places for the May rankings, with the former world No.1 and World Open champion Grinham slipping a place to No.17.
A disappointing quarter-final exit in the Irish Open for second seed Samantha Teran has seen the Mexican player slip to No.19, whilst Joey Chan of Hong Kong also slips a place to No.20.
Outside the Top20, Nicolette FernandesIrish Open final appearance has seen her rise three places to No.28 this month, just one place shy of her career best ranking.  Deon Saffrey’s Irish Open run also saw her leap three places as the Welsh qualifier reached the semi-finals of the event, beating third seed Aisling Blake in the opening round. Aisling has dropped 1 place to No. 24. The Welshwoman Saffrey now sits at No.48, her career best ranking.
The second WSA World Tour World Series event of the year, the Allam British Open, will take place in Hull, England from 19th May.

New PSA Rankings Show Increased Global Spread

1 May 2013

Whilst Egypt’s Ramy Ashour continues to lead the May Dunlop PSA Men’s World Squash Rankings by a considerable margin, it is the presence of 11 countries in the top 20 – representing four continents – which provides the most noteworthy aspect of the new list published today by the Professional Squash Association.

Swiss star Nicolas Mueller, his country’s highest-ranked player of all-time, moves up into the top 20 to add Switzerland to Egypt, England, France, Spain, Germany, Botswana, Australia, Netherlands, South Africa and India with players whose success on the PSA World Tour have earned them places in the elite top 20 group.

Further representation from Malaysia, Colombia, Finland, Hong Kong, Kuwait, New Zealand and Canada see players from 18 countries – and all five continents – in the top 40.

“To have a top twenty in any sport with this breadth of countries being represented is fantastic,” said PSA CEO Alex Gough.

“It shows another sign that squash is being played on a truly global front and we are very proud of this fact.  We will continue to keep growing the sport to all corners of the globe.”

Ashour, the reigning world champion from Cairo, holds his lead over England’s world number two Nick Matthew, while Frenchman Gregory Gaultier leapfrogs England’s James Willstrop to reclaim third place.

Mohamed El Shorbagy also rises above fellow Egyptian Karim Darwish to take over fifth place, while England’s Peter Barker does the same to Egyptian Amr Shabana to regain the No7 position.

Outside the top 20, several players mark career-high rankings – including France’s Gregoire Marche at 29 after his surprise quarter-final appearance in last month’s Grasshopper Cup in Switzerland; Kuwaiti Abdullah Al Muzayen at 33 following his 14th Tour title success at the Burgan Bank Challenger 10 on home soil; and New Zealand’s Campbell Grayson at 37 after winning the Houston Open in the USA.
